Local SEO for Roofers: How to Show Up in the Google Map Pack

By Microstax4 min readAugust 2026

When a homeowner's roof starts leaking, they don't scroll. They open Google, type "roofer near me," and call one of the first three companies on the map. Everything below that box might as well not exist.

That little cluster of three results, the "map pack," is where most roofing jobs are won or lost, long before a homeowner ever reaches your website. The good news: getting into it isn't luck, and it isn't expensive. It's a handful of things done consistently.

WHERE THE CLICKS GO ON "ROOFER NEAR ME" Map pack #1 ~45% of clicks Map pack #2 ~25% Map pack #3 ~15% Everyone below the pack the scraps The top three share the overwhelming majority of calls. Position matters more than almost anything else.

The three things Google actually ranks you on

Strip away the jargon and Google decides your map position on three factors:

Relevance. Does your profile clearly say you're a roofer? The right primary category and an accurate description do most of this work.

Distance. How close are you to the person searching? You can't move your shop, but a properly set service area helps Google understand where you work.

Prominence. How established and active do you look? This is where reviews, regular posts, photos, and consistent business details add up, and it's the factor most roofers ignore.

HOW GOOGLE RANKS THE MAP PACK Relevance Category & description Distance Service area accuracy Prominence Reviews & activity You can't control distance. You can absolutely control the other two.

Five fixes that move the needle (start this week)

You don't need an SEO agency for the basics. You need these five done properly:

1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. An unverified or unclaimed profile barely ranks. This is step zero.

2. Set the primary category to "Roofing Contractor." Not "Contractor," not "Construction Company." The exact category is one of the strongest relevance signals you have.

3. Get reviews, steadily. A profile that adds a few honest reviews every month looks alive and trustworthy to Google and to homeowners. A steady trickle beats a one-time pile.

4. Keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere. On your website, your profile, your Facebook page, directories. Mismatched details quietly drag your ranking down.

5. Post and add photos regularly. A few recent job photos and a weekly post tell Google the business is active. Dormant profiles slide.

The multiplier most roofers miss

Here's the part that ties it together. Ranking in the map pack gets you seen. But the homeowner still calls two or three of you. What decides who gets the job is who answers first and follows up.

So the businesses that dominate local search do two things at once: they show up in the pack, and they respond in seconds when the call comes in. Reviews feed the ranking, and fast responses win the jobs, the two reinforce each other. Being number one on the map does you little good if the call rings out while you're on a roof.

Get your profile right first. Then make sure every call and form that map position earns you actually gets answered.

Ranking is half the battle. Answering is the other half.
